Plant Wisdom Wednesday: Introduction to Fermentation with Sunflower Sarah

Wednesday, July 15th / 6:30-8:30 EDT

Sarah has been growing vegetables (and now herbs!) for most of her life, and has learned that when you grow lots of vegetables, you want to preserve them for later! Fermentation is an age old method of preserving, and is a healthful way to take care of your nutritional needs and gut biome. Plus, it’s an easy way to reduce your carbon footprint, especially if you ferment with wild foods. This class will review a short history of fermentation, and we will talk about simple ways to add more fermented foods back into your diet, as well as tasting a few examples of fermented foods. [eg. tempeh, mead, beer, fermented beans, kefir, bread, vinegar]. Sarah will provide you with some simple recipes to try at home, and we will demo how to make your own jar of kimchi or sauerkraut during the class for you to follow along and make with us!

We are excited to host this workshop live and in person at our new apothecary location located at 354 Litchfield Rd, New Milford, CT. We will have a limited class size and gather outside where we can gather responsibly and social distance on our beautiful back patio by the river. Hand sanitizer and a bathroom will be available. We ask that you please bring a mask or face covering for when you enter the building. Grateful to continue to gather, learn, and share about our herbal allies and earth medicine.

For those who may be further away, or unable to make it in person, we are offering an online zoom option to attend our live class virtually! You will need an updated Zoom app on your computer of phone. If you sign up for online participation, you will receive the zoom link invitation and handouts via email within a few hours of class beginning at 6:30 EDT.

If you’d like to follow along with our demo at home please have the following:

  • cabbage, grated/shredded

  • Sea salt

  • Additional vegetables: carrots, garlic scapes, onions, brussel sprouts, kale, whatever

  • herbs/spices if you like (dill seeds, carraway seeds, ex)
